Tele–medicine service for young patients launched at Luton and Dunstable

Specialist doctors use visual link to Great Ormond Street

Edited by Jane Hill: A new tele–visual link between paediatricians at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital and Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital could save the lives of children and babies with serious heart conditions.

Luton and Dunstable are one of the first hospitals in the East of England to launch the Tele–Med service, which will be used by specialist neonatologists who work with premature and critically ill babies as well as by paediatricians in the children’s wards and outpatients department.

The new machinery has a ‘real–time’ two–way video link between the two hospitals so cardiac specialists at Great Ormond St Children’s Hospital can discuss diagnoses face–to–face with doctors at the Luton and Dunstable. Local patients benefit from the shared expertise of specialist doctors at both hospitals at the one time without having to travel by ambulance to London.

Bedfordshire healthcare and service providers seek local people’s views

In reply to Shaping the Future of Care Together paper

Edited by Nick Adams: In a joint response to the Government on the Green Paper: Shaping the Future of Care Together, both NHS Bedfordshire, Central Bedfordshire Council, Carers in Bedfordshire and the Older People’s Reference Group recently organised events to seek the views of local service users, carers and stakeholders.

The Green Paper sets–out a plan for an England–wide social care and support system. It highlights the challenges faced by the current system and the need for radical reform, to develop a national care service that is fair, simple and affordable for everyone.

The events were held at the Community Fire station in Dunstable and the Priory House in Chicksands.

Bedford Bridge lights turn pink to aid work of Cancer Research UK

Join the fight for women’s survival, health campaign

Edited by Jane Hill: Cancer Research UK have once again worked together with Bedford Borough Council to turn Bedford’s Town Bridge lights pink, [Thursday 1 October], in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month [BCAM].

BCAM is an annual international health campaign organised by major breast cancer charities every October, to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention and cure.

It is the third year of participation for Bedford’s Town Bridge over the River Great Ouse, which has existed at least as far back as the 12th century.

Around 4,300 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the East of England, with numbers for Mid Bedfordshire [107 every year]; Bedford [113] and South Bedfordshire [92].

This year, Cancer Research UK’s breast cancer awareness and fundraising campaign is called ‘Join the fight for women’s survival’ and they hope to enlist the support of as many people as possible throughout Bedfordshire to organise their own fundraising events.

Cancer Research UK is the largest single funder of breast cancer research in the UK. In the last few years, more women have been diagnosed with breast cancer than ever before but, thanks to research into earlier diagnosis and better treatment, more are also surviving.

Celebrities who have agreed to Join the fight for women’s survival include Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman; ’60s style icon Twiggy; broadcaster Gloria Hunniford who lost her daughter Caron Keating to breast cancer; and actress and breast cancer survivor Rebekah Gibbs.

Jenny said: “I’ve had the opportunity to watch clients develop and achieve things they never thought possible, like gaining full–time employment and that’s been especially rewarding.”

Jenny plans to spend her retirement doing the things she does not normally have time for, for example, enrolling in a college arts course, swimming and socialising.

Luton to host British Museum’s Ghanaian textile exhibition

Fabric of a Nation runs until 8 November 2009

Edited by Jane Hill: This summer, Wardown Park Museum, Old Bedford Road, Luton will host the British Museum’s touring exhibition called ‘Fabric of a Nation: textiles and identity in modern Ghana’.

The exhibition will run until 8 November 2009 and admission is free.
